Nordin Maouli: From the Barracks to Concert Hall

Musician and Marine. Two worlds that at first glance seem to have little in common. But the strict discipline of the Marine Corps and the free expression of music together form a powerful contrast. ‘My work as a Marine keeps me sharp and disciplined, while music gives me the space to express my emotions and creativity’, says Maouli. Yet it was not love at first sight with the piano. His father, who had taught himself to play the piano, sent the young Nordin to piano lessons at the age of seven, and his mother brought him through all kinds of weather. ‘When my father played at home, I didn’t like it, but during my first lesson I did enjoy it’, he remembers. His piano teacher, Cor de Heus, gave him the freedom to choose his own songs, which slowly fueled his love for music. Music became his refuge, a place where he could express his emotions.
